Biotechnology(BT) is the third wave in bio-science and represents an interface of basic and applied sciences, where transformation of science into technology is witnessed. The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2004, The courses offered are: B.E., M.Sc. (Engg.) and Ph.D in Biotechnology. The Department imparts quality education to equip students with advanced skills compatible to the needs of Biotech industry and academia. Keeping in view the interdisciplinary nature of Biotechnology, the curricula offers an engineering base encompassing courses from Life science, Chemical engineering, Computer science, Electronics engineering, Mechanical engineering, management, mathematics, statistics, physics,chemistry and professional development so as to enable students to work not only in the Biotech industries but also in other firms.

The Department has a team of Eight dedicated and highly qualified experienced faculty members with good academic backgrounds, specializing in different areas of biotechnology and chemical engineering. Two of them are Doctorate degree holders & other four are at the virtue of completing their Doctorate degree.

To motivate and make the students and staff members competent enough, on regular basis seminars, guest lectures, workshops by eminent personalities and industrial visit are conducted in the department.

The department has been recognised as a Research Center by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi. The department has state of the art laboratories.The thrust areas of research in the department are phytochemistry, In-silico drug discovery, Plant Biotechnology, Bio-chemical & Bio-process Engineering, Fermentation Technology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Enzyme technology etc. with more than TWO hundred publications in various National and International peer reviewed journals.The students are encouraged to do in house research projects which helps them to handle independent projects to gain hands on practical exposure. Department has received research funds from VGST, KSCST & AGASTHYA FOUNDATION in the thirst areas. Also, department has industry interaction with Genie pvt ltd, Chlorobios, Clintrac pvt ltd, Stelixir, Genelon and so on.

Over the years, the department has earned Eleven VTU ranks in university examination and for the academic year 2017-18 department bagged the Gold medal(1st rank) of VTU. Many students are placed well by cracking competitive exams like GATE, GRE, GMAT, CAT etc. Also, our students are working in reputed Biotech giants namely Biocon, Kemwell, Molecular connections, Gangagen, Quintiles (IQVIA), Stelixier etc., Novo Nordisc and other IT companies

The Department of Biotechnology is currently headed by Dr. Veena S. More,who has 15 years of teaching experience across UG and PG courses.She has done her M.Sc and Ph.D in Biochemistry from Karnataka University,Dharwad.She has published more than 22 research papers in international and national peer reviewed scopus indexed ,Thomson Reuters listed journals with impact factors ranging from1.0 to 4.5. She holds life member of Society of Biological Chemists India. She has attended and presented papers in various National and International scientific conferences and won Best Poster awards in few conferences. She was a BOE Member of VTU and was invited for BOS meetings as special invitee for framing curriculum of Biotechnology of VTU
