Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2004. The Department imparts education to equip students with modern skills compatible to the needs of industry and academia. Keeping in view the interdisciplinary nature of Biotechnology, the curricula offers an engineering base encompassing courses from chemical engineering, computer science & engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, management, mathematics, statistics, physics and professional development so as to enable students to work not only in the Biotech industries but also in other industries. The students are provided an opportunity to do a research project which helps them to handle independent projects in academia and industry.

The Department has a team of 09 faculty members with reputed backgrounds, specializing in different areas of biotechnology.  There is also an active research team with thrust areas which include Bio-chemical & Bio-process Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Fermentation Technology, Enzyme technology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioinformatics etc. with publications in various National and International journals of high repute. The department has been declared as a Research Center by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).

Over the years, the department has earned several VTU ranks and this time it was Ashwitha H securing 7th rank for VTU examination-2012. Along with acedemics, department has equally contributed in several extracurricular activities and conducted an departmental fest named “We Blitz” on October 2013 in which “Novice Vignettes” an actively working Photographic club for students was launched. “Parishudh” another non-technical forum formed by Department staff and students containing an online database parishudh.org a blood donor’s portal which has been used to save many lives thus proving to be a helping hand to the society.

Projects Granted To The Department:

Project grant has been received for the project entitled “Design and Fabrication of packed Bed Bioreactor for Biodiesel Production from waste Cocking Oil Using Immobilized Lipase and Fungal Whole Cells” for 6th semester students Manasa S., Thosif and Gajendra Prasad, under the guidance of Mr. T. P. Krishna Murthy funded by “Vision Group of Science and Technology” under Technology Related Innovative Project (TRIP), 2013.

Project grant has been received for “Fabrication of zinc oxide-chitosan based biocompatible photocatalytic reactor for the degradation of toxic textile dye congo red” for 8th semester students Kusha Sharma and Swati Krishna, under the guidance of Mr. Vijay Kishore and Dr. Chaitanya Lakshmi funded by “Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology” for student projects programme, 2013-2014.

Project grant has been received for “Bioaccumulation of lead metal ions from paint industry effluents by indigenous bacteria” for 8th semester students Monisha J, Tenzin Tseten and Naresh A, under the guidance of  Mrs. Blessy B Mathew funded by “Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology” for student projects programme, 2013-2014.

Faculty development Program was conducted at the Department of Biotechnology, Sapthagiri College of Engineering, on “Current advances in Bioprocess Engineering” funded and sponsored by VTU-VGST in 2013
